man’s best friend

March 25, 2013. This is the day Giorgio and I welcomed Amelia into our house and lives and it seems like yesterday. The happiness she has brought us since that day is indescribable. Amelia is my first dog, she taught me many things and she showed me the love only a dog could give: authentic and unconditional.

In exchange for this love, we have to take care of them in the best way possible; in fact, today I’m going to give some tips on how to help our friends, in particular for the summer.

As much as I love warm weather, it can often become unbearable, especially for our dogs but, with a couple of tricks, we can help them:

First of all, consider that humans and dogs don’t regulate body temperature in the same way; in fact, they sweat from their pads therefore:

1. Avoid taking them for a walk during the hottest hours of the day, especially if you live in the city: Have you ever tried to touch or walk barefoot on the asphalt at noon on the 15th of August? I personally wouldn’t try!

They regulate their temperature panting, with considerable loss of liquid, so:

2. Make sure your dog always has water, preferably fresh and clean, whether at home or during the walk.

Or trough the fur, which protects their skin from cold in winter and heat in summer, therefore:

3. Protect your dog from direct sunlight and ask advice from experts before cutting their fur.

4. We must also remember to always protect them from parasites (fleas, ticks, mosquitoes..), following the vet directions. I personally use a product that my vet suggested me, by CEVA.

I found particularly convenient because it ensures the effectiveness from the first day against all types of parasites, for one month.

Though they may seem predictable, other tips are:

5. Don’t worry too much if your dog doesn’t have the usual appetite;

6. Never leave your dog alone in the car on a hot summer day. I know that a few minutes can seem harmless but they can be fatal for our friends.

I’m not an expert so always remember to ask your vet for advice, these are suggestions deriving from my own experience so, if you have other tips, please feel free to comment, Amelia and I would love to hear them. Have a nice day, you and your little friends!

    It’s awesome that you remind people of the dangers they can put their animals into with leaving the dog in a car even though it’s not super hot outside. Even though it might not be super warm outside it will get really hot inside the car really fast and a lot of people don’t realize this. Your little amelia is super cute :) .
